Justin Grant

The Summerville Mayor's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities has named Stratford High student Justin Grant as its annual Student of the Year. The award was presented to Grant at the organization’s Annual Awards Luncheon at the Summerville Country Club. He'll also receive a small scholarship prize with his award.

Grant is a member of SHS Renaissance and has also received Berkeley County School District’s Turnaround Award. He is an Assistant Soccer Coach volunteer for Stratford High and assists with the Athletic Booster Club, in addition to serving as a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes and the Unified Knights.

"I first met Justin while visiting his classroom at Stratford High School. He welcomed me warmly and asked thoughtful questions, already showing a deep commitment to his growth and to education," Superintendent Anthony Dixon said. "This recognition is truly well-deserved.”

Grant is also a part of the 2024-25 Berkeley County Project SEARCH class. Project SEARCH prepares young people with significant disabilities for success in employment opportunities. Throughout the school year, these students work in departments at Berkeley County Government and develop skills and training to prepare them for future jobs. The program has been made possible in Berkeley County thanks to support from County leadership and partnerships with Berkeley County School District and S.C. Vocational Rehabilitation.

"This program is near and dear to our hearts at Berkeley County. Each year, these students showcase their hard work alongside our County departments and set the bar high when it comes to dedication and drive to their duties," Johnny Cribb, Berkeley County Supervisor, said "They learn valuable job and life skills, and in return, they bless our staff immensely.”

Each year, starting in January, nominations may be submitted for awards with The Summerville Mayor's Committee on Employment of People with Disabilities. A Scholarship Committee then reviews all nominations and selects those individuals who go above and beyond other nominees in each category. The following comment was included on Grant’s nomination form:

“His positive attitude and relentless drive to make a difference in the world really shines through in his personality and fortitude to overcome obstacles. He proves that a person’s value is not defined by their limitations but by their actions and their impact on others. He is someone who truly inspires those around him by his ability and actions to overcome any challenge he faces.”

Congratulations!
